Challenge

The global pet tech market, which topped $5 billion last year and could grow at a CAGR of 20% between 2022 and 2028, presents lucrative opportunities for technology startups. One of its most promising segments is dog walking services — an industry that is worth $979.2 million in the USA alone and continues to grow, fueled by successful vaccine rollouts and a gradual return to the office. Constant learners at heart, the ITRex UI/UX design team took on a dog walking app development challenge. What started as a market research project for a tech startup blossomed into a pet app design concept that gave us a better understanding of the dog owner/walker needs.

As part of the pet app UI design project, our team needed to:
Conduct extensive market, competitor, and user research. This would help us identify the closest rivals within the dog walking services niche (i.e., Wag, Rover, and Barkly Pets), study their approach to pet app UI/UX design, and come up with a unique concept addressing the user experience gaps in existing applications
Develop a pet care app design concept. Our goal was to create an interactive dog walking app prototype, marrying the functionality of on-demand services apps like Uber with a simple yet visually appealing application interface

Solution

Based on the insights from the market, competitor, and user research, we ideated a comprehensive technology solution for a dog walking service. Its components would include:
A back end supporting the management of the dog walking application (iOS, Android, or cross-platform) and its integrations with third-party services like maps, payments, and social networks
A web-based admin console for dog walking business owners, which combines content management and CRM capabilities
We proceeded with the pet care app UI/UX design by creating an interactive prototype containing:
Separate types of user accounts for pet owners and dog walkers
Live chat functionality
An interactive map that displays households and dog walkers in a neighborhood and allows pet owners to track dog walking routes in real time
Intuitive forms for creating dog walking requests and reports
Secure one-click payments
Social login via a Facebook, Twitter, Google, or Apple account

Impact

Having previously built a dog boarding application for DogVacay, we wanted to create a single-purpose pet care app with modern design, user-friendly navigation, and robust functionality under the hood
Although it was a non-commercial project, we can now apply the knowledge and skills gained from it to help your startup with on-demand dog walking app design and development. Drop us a line to discuss your mobile app development needs!
